Kelimutu is one of Indonesia's most mesmerizing natural wonders. Located in central Flores, this volcano features three crater lakes that change colors over time — from turquoise to deep red, from green to black.
Getting There
The nearest town is Moni, about 15 km from the summit. From Ende (the nearest airport), it's a scenic 2-hour drive through lush mountain roads. Most visitors arrive the evening before and start the hike at 4 AM to catch sunrise.
The Sunrise Experience
The pre-dawn hike takes about 30 minutes from the parking area. As the sun rises, the mist slowly lifts to reveal the three lakes in all their glory. The colors you'll see depend on the mineral content and volcanic gas activity — no two visits are exactly the same.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (April to October) offers the clearest skies. July and August are peak months but also the busiest. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in April, May, or September.
Tips for Visitors
